The Google trend for the search query “quadratic formula”.
It repeats in the same pattern every year. Down in summer, up in September, down again in December and up again in spring time before going down again in the summer. And so it goes on forever.

Eep!

I used to feel the same way about this, but then someone reminded me: the rovers were literally made to go to Mars.  They were manufactured on Earth, but everything about them was designed with the red planet in mind- their sensors were made for a thinner drier atmosphere, their working parts built to move in lower gravity.  On Earth, Spirit might not have even lasted the 90 days of her predicted lifespan before breaking, let alone nearly seven years. As harsh of an environment as it is, they were better adapted for there than here.
We didn’t abandon the Mars rovers.  We sent them home.
